A Little About Me

I ask a lot of questions. Probably too many. But I like understanding things, hearing different perspectives and figuring out what I actually believe, not just what I’m supposed to believe. I can get completely absorbed in a conversation about philosophy, politics, women’s rights, or why people believe what they believe, and then go home and spend an unreasonable amount of time talking to my cat, Chloe, who has very little interest in any of it.

I love reading because I like the feeling of changing my mind. Some of the books that have stayed with me are Meditations, The Republic, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Stranger. I’m drawn to books that make me uncomfortable in a good way, the ones that leave me thinking about them days later.
A lot of what interests me comes back to justice. Who gets heard? Who makes decisions? How do laws shape people’s lives? And what happens when those laws don’t feel fair? I feel a sense of responsibility to help solve the inequities of our world.
We have to do something about it. I need to do something about it.

11 Things I Believe

A Few Words I Like

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates

“Just keep swimming: – Finding Nemo

“My parents have opinions. So do I. It works out eventually.” – Anonymous

Mostly, I’m still figuring things out. I’m figuring out what I believe, what I want to challenge, what I want to protect, and where I can actually make a difference. That might be why I love philosophy so much. It gives me permission to keep asking questions. Chloe, on the other hand, seems very comfortable believing she already has all the answers.

What I Do

Canvassing

I spend weekends knocking on doors, getting some slammed in my face, and learning to keep going anyway.

Social Media

Not what you think. I pay attention to how public content shapes opinions, behavior and what people believe.

Studying

I’m taking nine classes senior year, so “free time” is mostly theoretical.

Public Voices & Interviews

I talk with people whose perspectives help me better understand the issues shaping our communities, safety and future.

Perspectives

Thank you for your patience! I am trying to figure out how to upload all the conversations. Stay tuned!

Perspectives is a series of conversations with people of different ages, backgrounds and experiences, including lawmakers, policymakers, mayors, community and religious leaders, educators, advocates and others whose work or life experience offers a perspective worth hearing.

Through 30-minute conversations, I explore the issues shaping our communities and our country, including public safety, health care, immigration, women’s rights, the environment, education, government and other social and policy issues. These conversations are also about the person behind the position: what influenced them, what they have learned, what has challenged their thinking and why they chose to do the work they do.

I don’t expect everyone to agree. I just want to hear different views, ask questions and understand where people are coming from.
